Most frequently asked questions about kiteboard spare parts:
Which screws do I need for my kiteboard?
The screws you need depend on your kiteboard’s brand and model, and most importantly, on the part you’re attaching (pads, straps, fins, or handle). Most kiteboards use M6 screws, but the length varies. For pads and straps, screws between 16 and 25 mm are common, depending on your pad’s thickness and your board’s brand. Fins usually require shorter screws, typically between 10 and 16 mm. Screws that are too short won’t hold properly, while screws that are too long can damage the inserts or the board. Grab handles usually use M6 screws between 20 and 30 mm, but always measure the distance between inserts and board thickness to be sure.
When buying pads and straps, don’t forget to check if washers are included. A washer is the small part that sits between your binding and screw on your twintip or surfboard. We often hear people call it “that little plastic thing,” but it’s actually called a washer. Washers often vary by brand and aren’t always interchangeable. You need washers to secure your bindings properly — without them, it’s not possible. Washers are also used with kite boots. Also, pay attention to the thread type, as some brands use special inserts or proprietary screw systems. Using a different brand of straps or fins than your board? Then it’s extra important to check compatibility carefully. Not sure? Take a photo of your board and the parts you want to attach and send it to us. We’ll find the right screws for your setup so you can kite safely and confidently.
Surfboard screws are usually self-tapping and longer than those used for twintips. These are often included with your surfboard straps. Keep in mind that not all boards are made for strap setups, some don’t have inserts at all. The fins on surfboards often don’t require screws, as they’re mounted using a fin box system. Looking for specific screws for a foil setup? Contact us, and we’ll do our best to find them for you.
What should I look for when buying a grab handle?
When buying a grab handle, it’s important to check the width. The distance between your board’s inserts must match the handle’s length — this varies by brand and model, so measure carefully before ordering. Many grab handles come with screws, but always check if they’re compatible with your board’s inserts. Do a lot of board-offs? Then a slightly higher grab handle is a smart choice, as it’s easier to grab during tricks. For beginners, a bright color helps you spot your board quickly after a crash. Also check the grip: some handles have a ribbed surface or foam layer for extra hold, even with wet hands. Material also matters; sturdy plastic or rubber-coated models usually last longer and feel more comfortable. In short, choose a grab handle that matches your board, style, and skill level. Still unsure? We’ll gladly help you find the right one.
How do I replace the fins on my kiteboard?
Replacing your kiteboard fins is luckily very easy and something you can usually do yourself. Start by unscrewing the old fins using the appropriate screwdriver or Allen key, depending on your board’s screw type. Be careful not to damage or strip the screws. Once the old fins are removed, install the new ones in the same position. Make sure to use fins that match your board’s brand and model, both in shape and screw spacing. Tighten the screws firmly but not too tightly to avoid damaging the inserts or board. A pro tip from Kitemana: when mounting your first fin, double-check that it’s facing the right direction, with the blunt edge pointing outward, mounting them all backward is a classic beginner mistake!
If you’re unsure whether the new fins fit your board or don’t know which ones to get, feel free to contact us. With a photo of your board and your old fin, we can quickly identify the perfect match. This way, you’ll be back on the water with fresh fins in no time.
