What properties does a wave kite have?

For many kiters, riding waves is the ultimate feeling in kitesurfing. A wave kite is specially designed for wave riding. Drift is crucial in a wave kite. Drift is a term indicating that a kite can follow the wind well as you surf the wave. This means there is little power in the kite, allowing you to fully focus on riding the wave. Additionally, it's important that the kite can steer quickly, allowing you to position yourself perfectly on the wave. Another essential feature is good depower, allowing you to essentially 'turn off' the kite to harmonize with the wave. Furthermore, easy and fast relaunch is crucial for a wave kite, enabling you to get the kite back in the air quickly if you accidentally crash it in front of a big wave. It's also important that a wave kite can sail upwind quickly and easily. After riding a wave, you often lose a lot of height, and you want to get back upwind as quickly as possible to catch the next wave. Some examples of wave kites are: North Carve, Duotone Neo , and the Core Section.

Are wave kites suitable for beginners?

Yes, wave kites are excellent for beginners. Wave kites have super-friendly characteristics, such as quick relaunch, significant depower, and they assist you in easily sailing upwind. Often, wave kites also feel very user-friendly on the bar, with moderate bar pressure. Perfect for beginners.

Are wave kites suitable for freeride?

Wave kites are indeed suitable for freeride, especially for lighter kitesurfers. With a wave kite, you can comfortably cruise on your kitesurf wave board or twin tip, even in lighter winds. Wave kites are often faster, allowing you to easily make turns, and the kite can quickly follow your movements. If you are looking for a specific freeride kite, check here .

Are wave kites suitable for foil kitesurfing?

Wave kites generally have a good low-end due to their light weight. A wave kite starts flying with just a bit of wind, making them perfect for kite foiling. Additionally, you want your kite to provide minimal power during turns. A wave kite exerts less force on your harness, and when you steer the kite from one side of the wind window to the other, it will gradually release power, reducing the likelihood of pulling you off your foil too quickly.

Are wave kites suitable for strapless freestyle?

Team riders like Keahi De Aboitiz, Pedro Matos, and Willow-River Tonkin all engage in strapless wave and strapless freestyle using dedicated wave kites. Wave kites are incredibly well-suited for strapless freestyle, even better suited than freestyle kites.

Can I jump with a wave kite?

The typical characteristics of a wave kite are not ideal for jumping with a kite. Of course, you can jump, but you won't be breaking any height records. Vertical lift and a strong pull are qualities needed for a big air kite, precisely the characteristics you wouldn't prefer in a wave kite. If you are looking for a kite for jumping, check here .

Do I need a special bar for my wave kite?

Generally, it is advisable to use a bar from the same brand as your wave kite. Many brands offer small, large, and sometimes medium-sized bars. You want the kite to steer as quickly as possible, and this is enhanced with a larger bar. A larger bar allows you to create a greater angle, making steering easier. For wave kiters, there are also special chicken loops that you can combine with a slider rope, such as the Duotone Rope Harness Kit 2024. A slider rope is a line that replaces the usual hook. An example of a spreader bar with a spreader rope is the Mystic Stealth Bar Surf. Thanks to the slider rope, you have more freedom of movement while riding waves, making it easier to go for those top and bottom turns.
