How thick a kids' wetsuit should be depends entirely on the temperatures at which your kid mainly spends time in the water. The wind speed also plays a role, since the perceived temperature can be significantly lower than the actual temperature on days with a lot of wind. A 5mm kids' wetsuit is ideal for spring, autumn and colder days in summer, and a 2-3mm steamer or shorty is suitable for very warm summer days.

When the water and air are warm in the summer, a 3mm wetsuit for kids is the right choice. A 3mm wetsuit offers sufficient protection against wind chill and the sun and gives your kid plenty of freedom of movement.

A children's 5mm wetsuit is suitable for days with unsteady weather, which can happen in Northern Europe in spring and autumn, but also every now and then in summer. A 5mm kids wetsuit is recommended from a water and air temperature of 8-10 degrees. But keep in mind, that on days with a lot of wind, the perceived temperature can be significantly lower than the actual one.

Whether a kids' wetsuit with a front zip or a back zip is more suitable depends on what you expect from the wetsuit. A children's wetsuit with a front zip provides slightly better thermal insulation, since less water can get through the front zip and the wetsuit can adapt better to the body. However, a back-zip wetsuit is easier for kids to put on and to take off, and a back-zip wetsuit is usually less expensive.

A wetsuit protects against UV radiation and at the same time ensures that your kid does not get cold too quickly in the water.

A 3mm wetsuit for kids is suitable at a water temperature of approx. 18 degrees water temperature, whereby the air should be at least as warm. This is the case, for example, in the northern European summer. However, the wind chill factor also plays a role in whether a 3mm wetsuit is warm enough, as a lot of wind can significantly reduce the perceived temperature.

A wetsuit for kids should fit well so that it does not wrinkle as much as possible. Because only then does the kids' wetsuit unfold its best thermal performance.
