For over 20 years, Duotone has been developing high-quality kitesurfing equipment, including kites, kiteboards, surfboards, and kitesurf bars, and they have been a leader in the kitesurfing industry for many years. Building a brand is not an easy task, and ensuring quality is a complex process. Team riders like kiteloop king Aaron Hadlow, freestyle specialists Tom Hebert and Gianmaria Coccoluto, strapless emperor Airton Cozzolino Lopes, and BigAir hero Lasse Walker have been part of the successful team in recent years. With new talents like Liam Whaley, Andrea Principi, and Mikaili Sol, they will continue to shine on the stage in the coming years. On this page, you can read about the history of the Duotone kite brand, how it has evolved, and why we are so enthusiastic about the Duotone brand.
Duotone Kiteboarding the Brand
The birth of Duotone Kiteboarding did not come without its challenges. In 2017, rumors began to circulate that the existing kite brand from Austrian company Boards & More, known as North, would not continue under the name North Kiteboarding. Eventually, after months of speculation about various brand names for the 'new' kite brand from Boards & More, the decision was made, and Boards & More continued with North under the new brand name Duotone Kiteboarding. In essence, not much has changed. The designers have remained, Duotone Kiteboarding still possesses the same passion for kitesurfing, and they continue to produce with the same, if not better, quality. The same model names for kites and boards such as the Duotone Vegas, Duotone Evo, Duotone Rebel, Duotone Neo, and Duotone Jaime remain. For a significant period, Duotone produced their kiteboards in the world's first snowboard production facility powered by 100% clean energy: CAPITA Mothership. Up to the present day, Duotone continues to have their kiteboards produced by SWS Board Technology in Dubai.
Duotone Kiteboarding the History
The product history of kitesurfing at Duotone dates back to 2001. Even earlier, in 1957, Lowell North started the brand specializing in sailing. Later, the interest shifted to windsurfing, and the precursor of Duotone began producing windsurfing sails. In the nineties, the potential of kitesurfing was recognized, and in 2000, under the leadership of Ken Miller, David Johnson, and Till Eberle, the first kite was released under the name of the predecessor of Duotone Kiteboarding: the Rhino 1. We now know that many kite classics would follow, such as the Duotone Vegas, Duotone Rebel, Duotone Neo, Duotone Evo, and more. All of them have their roots in the same passion for the sport of kitesurfing. In the past, Boards & More conducted an extensive search for a place where Duotone kites could be manufactured with the highest quality, and this commitment to quality is reflected in today's Duotone kitesurfing products of the highest caliber.

Duotone Kiteboarding Development
Without development and innovation, you won't get anywhere. The kitesurfing sport relies heavily on equipment, including kites, kiteboards, and bars. If you have good equipment, kitesurfing becomes more enjoyable and easier. But all this 'high-tech' kitesurfing gear that we use nowadays didn't just appear overnight. It has undergone a long process of development, and we are curious about where the development of kitesurfing materials will go in the future.
Duotone Kiteboarding SLS
Duotone was the first to introduce quality levels in their product line. In addition to the existing models, Duotone has introduced the SLS versions. SLS stands for Strong Light Superior. Duotone kites with SLS material include the Rebel SLS, Evo SLS, Neo SLS, and Dice SLS. What can you expect from the SLS material in these models:
- -15% lighter overall
- -5 times stronger against tearing
- -50 % less stretch compared to standard dacron. A very stiff material, resulting in high structural stiffness, especially noticeable in strong winds, leading to less deformation of the overall structure of the kite.
- -Penta TX is used in the leading edge and the center strut.
Duotone Kiteboarding D/Lab
D/LAB is Duotone's version of the ultimate product without any compromises. The purpose of D/LAB is to create the finest kiteboarding equipment using the best materials and construction methods on this planet, without limitations.
Duotone hand-selects the latest materials, spends years refining construction methods for those materials, and testing. And testing. And testing. Only when they are 100% certain that a piece of equipment is absolutely the best, they consider it worthy of the D/LAB label.
In the kites, they use Aluula material in the D/Lab. The new Aluula fabric, combined with new construction features, reduces the weight of the kite by up to 30% compared to standard constructions. Elsewhere, the construction has been refined to reduce weight wherever possible, while innovative use of material weaves allows for improved turning ability and responsiveness.
If your consideration is performance at any cost. If you want the absolute latest and unquestionably best equipment. If you want all the benefits of tomorrow's technology, tested and perfected and available today, then D/LAB is for you.
Duotonekites over the Years
Duotone Kiteboarding has a long history in the development of kitesurfing kites within the kitesurfing world. Below is an overview of the different kites over the years.
The Duotone Rhino 1, at the time, was a true pioneer. A 4-line C-kite with a segmented leading edge.
The Duotone Vegas, the kite that has been in Duotone's kitesurfing lineup for the longest time. A true Freestyle champion.
The Duotone Rebel is the second-longest-running kite in the Duotone kitesurf range, following the Vegas. The Rebel is cherished for its delightful freeride characteristics and extended hangtime, allowing for an incredible variety of freestyle kitesurfing tricks. Meanwhile, Duotone has replaced the Rebel with an SLS version. The Rebel SLS still offers that fantastic hangtime but has become faster and more stable.
The Duotone Evo kite has been a solid choice for years when it comes to all-round Freeride and stable beginner kites. In addition to the regular Evo, there is also an Evo SLS and even an Evo D/Lab, which is highly regarded by the new generation as a big favorite.
For several years now, we have the Duotone Neo in the lineup. This kite was developed due to the increasing number of kitesurfers who are solely focused on wave riding. We also see that the Duotone Neo is used by several kitesurfing schools as a teaching kite. There is also a Neo SLS version and a Neo D/Lab version available for the Neo.
And then we have the Duotone Dice. The Duotone Dice is very popular among a large group of advanced kitesurfers. Duotone developed the Dice as a freestyle/wave kite but is praised by, among others, Lasse Walker for its smooth pull, extended hangtime, and kiteloops with great control. There is also a Dice SLS version available for the Dice.
For lightwind conditions, Duotone has the Juice. An ideal kite that is, of course, also available in the D/Lab version. With the Juice D/Lab, the aluula material truly shines with 30% less weight.
Duotone kiteboarding kiteboards
In addition to the Duotone kites, development in Duotone boards is always changing. For every kitesurfing level and style, Duotone has a board that perfectly complements it. From twin-tip kitesurf boards to wave or directional surfboards, Duotone boards ride like no other and offer Austrian quality. While kiteboards used to be relatively flat with few channels, they are now packed with the latest technologies within the kitesurfing realm. Duotone's latest significant innovation in kiteboards is the 3D designed and cut double diffuser, which you can find in kiteboards like the Duotone Jaime and Duotone Team series. This bottom provides even more grip and softer landings! Also, the space flex tips of your board make it even easier to ride through choppy waters. Duotone Kiteboarding will continue to innovate in the kitesurfing sport, and we will welcome these innovations with open arms.
