How thick should a men's wetsuit for kitesurfing be?
The thickness of a wetsuit determines the temperature up to which it will keep you warm. Both the air and the water temperature play a role here. The thicker the neoprene of a wetsuit, the colder the conditions to kitesurf can be. So if you plan to go kitesurfing mainly in summer, a 3mm wetsuit or shorty might be enough. If you want to be on the water all year round, also in winter, you should rather choose a 4mm, 5mm or even 6mm wetsuit. In addition, your personal sensation of temperatures plays a big role whether you should choose a thinner or thicker wetsuit.
How thick should my wetsuit be if I want to kitesurf all year round?
The thickness of the wetsuit depends on the water and air temperature and therefore also on the spot where you primarily want to go kitesurfing all year round. If you are looking for a year-round wetsuit for Northern Europe, a 4mm or 5mm wetsuit is an option because it does not get too warm in summer and should be sufficient for spring and autumn. In winter you can upgrade your wetsuit with accessories such as an additional hood, neoprene shoes and a neoprene top or jacket. Of course, it depends on how sensitive you are to cold temperatures whether you should choose a thicker or thinner wetsuit.
Which wetsuit do I need for the summer?
If you are looking for a wetsuit for the Northern European summer, everything from a 4mm or 3mm steamer wetsuit to a shorty or springsuit is possible, depending on your personal sensitivity. A steamer wetsuit has long arms and long legs and accordingly keeps you warm and also protects you from the sun and from hard landings. A shorty, on the other hand, has short arms and short legs and is usually made of a very thin 2mm to 3mm neoprene, giving you maximum freedom of movement. A springsuit has long legs and short arms and is usually 2mm, 3mm or 4mm thick. A spring suit offers you a good combination of warmth, freedom of movement and protection from the sun.
Which wetsuit do I need for kitesurfing in winter?
A typical wetsuit for winter is a 6mm or 5mm wetsuit, which has a warm lining and a fixed hood for your head. In addition, you should wear neoprene shoes and gloves so that you can enjoy your winter session as long as possible.
When do I need a 5mm wetsuit?
A 5mm wetsuit is roughly recommended for water temperatures of 10-17 degrees Celsius. Accordingly, a 5mm wetsuit is suitable for kitesurfing in Northern Europe in autumn and spring. With accessories such as a hood, an under-top, boots and gloves, you can possibly kitesurf with a 5mm also in winter. Depending on the water temperature and your personal sensitivity, you can kitesurf with a 5mm wetsuit even in summer.
What is the advantage of a frontzip wetsuit over a backzip wetsuit?
A front zip or chest zip wetsuit offers you more flexibility and freedom of movement than a back zip wetsuit thanks to the zipper on the front of the chest. In addition, your wetsuit with a front zip keeps you warmer than a back zip wetsuit, as less water can get through the front zip. Therefore, a frontzip neoprene suit is ideal for those wetsuit models that should keep you particularly warm and flexible. However, a front zip is a little more difficult to put on than a back zip wetsuit.
For what temperature should I choose a shorty wetsuit?
A shorty wetsuit is recommended for warm water temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. That can be the case on a warm summer day in Northern Europe. But of course the air temperature also has an influence on whether a shorty will keep you warm enough while kitesurfing. Because even if the water is warm, a cold wind can quickly cool you down while kitesurfing. Of course, it also matters how sensitive you are, whether a shorty wetsuit will keep you warm enough during your summer session. If you are in a place where both the water and the air temperature are sufficiently warm, a shorty is definitely the right choice.
For which season of the year is a 3mm wetsuit suitable?
A 3mm steamer wetsuit or springsuit is ideal for warm summer sessions in Northern Europe. Depending on how cold you feel, you can wear your 3mm wetsuit in late spring or until early autumn. A 3mm wetsuit is recommended from a water temperature of 17-22 degrees Celsius, whereby you should also pay attention to the outside temperature and wind strength due to the wind chill when kitesurfing.
Are there zipfree wetsuits without a zipper?
There are also wetsuits that do not have a zipper, so-called "Zipless" or "Zipfree" wetsuits. A Zipfree wetsuit has the advantage that it offers you maximum flexibility and freedom of movement and adapts to your body like a second skin. However, the entry is more difficult than with a wetsuit with zipper.
